Upstairs Over A Vacant Lot by Dr. Paul Collins

Is the wealth of the world really laid up for the righteous?
The Old Testament book of Proverbs states that the wealth of the world (wicked; sinner) is laid up for the righteous (the good; the true children of God). However, this message follows the words that “the good leave an inheritance to their children’s children. Okay, call me old fashioned, but I believe Solomon was wise and he knew whereof he spoke (or wrote, as the case may have been). If we can postulate the words recorded in Proverbs chapter 13 and verse 22 are true, then a further examination of the subject of this column is in order.
First, I unequivocally state that I am not opposed to wealth or the wealthy. Also, I affirm that I would like to be counted among the financially wealthy — which is the kind of wealth being referenced in the words of Solomon. Who knows, maybe someday I will be listed by Forbes. Is there any harm in dreaming?
This very short column will be parlayed into an attempt to affirm that wealth rightfully belongs to those who love the God who is the father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The reason for this approach is because I am a Christian, and that is the way I want it to be. If you are not a Christian, write this column your way. However, you will be wasting your time.
The Bible makes it abundantly clear that all wealth comes out of the earth (in one way or another), and “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” So, if you have anything that resembles wealth, it is directly related to the earth and it was God who created the earth. Therefore, ownership is an illusion and stewardship is a reality. You are merely a caretaker with the responsibility to multiply that which you hold for God.
Now, here’s the “kicker”: The unrighteous do not knowingly practice stewardship. They think they own what they hold! A hallmark of unrighteousness is ignorance of the ways of God. Ignorance of God’s law is no excuse! The plan is simple. Everything will be returned to God and placed in the stewardship of his people. You see, God is in the redemption business. He redeems souls, property, creation, and wealth. Christians have it coming!
