Pickup truck bed coatings have been around for a while. They protect the truck bed from getting dented or scratched when loading and hauling rocks, bricks, and cement blocks. But in the last decade an ultra-durable pray-on coating has been developed that is so strong it can make the most fragile things indestructible. For instance, a 1/8 inch coating of Line-X can be sprayed on pumpkins, watermelons, and raw eggs and make them unbreakable when dropped from a 150-foot tower onto a concrete surface! This amazing coating caused the fragile objects to bounce rather than shatter. One demonstration sprayed a thin coating of Line-X on a 16-ounce disposable plastic cup and it supported the weight of a 300-pound man. When the same layer of Line-X is sprayed on wood and cinder block structures it makes them bomb-proof. In fact, a blast-proof version of this stuff (Paxcon) is used to bomb-proof rooms in the Pentagon and has numerous other military applications. It is truly amazing how such a thin layer of this spray-on coating can make the breakable indestructible.
However there is one application of the Line-X coating that doesn’t work. It can’t be sprayed on human skin to make it impervious to bullets and blows. For the coating must be applied hot and under great pressure and it would burn and bond instantly with the skin. Nor can it be sprayed over the human heart – to make it unbreakable. Too bad. We could really use something that could make our bodies and our hearts injury-proof.
Yet the Scripture does promise a far more reliable form of protection. When God called the prophet Jeremiah to stand up against kings, princes, crooked priests, and false-prophets the young man was understandably afraid and felt like an inexperienced child. Yet God told him not to worry about his own weakness, timidity, and youth – for God would make Jeremiah indestructible to his opponents. God told him, “Now behold, I have made you today as a fortified city and as a pillar of iron and as walls of bronze against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests and against the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you,” declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 1:18-19). God Himself would be Jeremiah’s indestructible armor.
This is why the Scripture implores us to “put on the full armor of God” in order to survive and stand against all the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:10-18). God Himself is that “spray on coating” that protects us in spiritual conflict. For the “armor of God” is the armor that consists of God – God’s presence and attributes. His power, His truth, His love, His faith, and His word are what we need to arm ourselves as we face the challenges of this day. No matter how weak and fragile we may be against the fury of Satan’s attacks – the coating of God’s presence and power will make us absolutely shatter-proof against him.
PRAYER: Almighty and merciful Father, arm me this day with strength and wisdom for battle. Clothe me, O God, with Your power. Fill me with Your Spirit. Pour out Your love into my heart that I may overcome all the hatred and bigotry that is hurled against me. When the world and the devil hammer me with temptations, make me shatter-proof and victorious against them. Amen.
