The greatest gift we can give someone is our time, our attention, our love, our concern. All of us have relatives who ignore our words and act as if we are foolish in placing our confidence and trust in Jesus Christ. While they may seem to pay no heed to the desire of our heart that they come to know God and the grace and power of His forgiveness, we are not to lose hope.
Proverbs 13:12 states: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.” What is this proverb attempting to speak to us when our natural eyes do not behold the desire of our heart?
Please note this proverb states that hope deferred makes the heart sick. To defer is to suspend or to put something off until a later time. The Christian is not to live any moment in life with hope that is deferred. We are instructed to place our hope in God with full assurance He is able to do exceedingly above that which we are capable of thinking. Hope is defined by the dictionary as ‘a feeling of trust.’ May I suggest that hope should be defined by the Christian as ‘total confidence in God that He will deliver as He has promised.’ It means to live every moment with an unfailing belief God has heard our cry of faith, that He is in control and has the power to change the course of history in the life of any individual.
Abraham is an example of the hope we are to hold within our heart. Romans 4:18-21 states: “Even when there was no reason to hope, Abraham kept hoping – believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!” And Abraham’s faith did not weaken, even though, at about 100 years of age, he figured his body was as good as dead – and so was Sarah’s womb. Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.” (NLT)
Be encouraged today and place your hope and trust in God – do not suspend your confidence in God. He is able to do exceedingly more than we can ever anticipate.
“5 You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds, O God our savior. You are the hope of everyone on earth, even those who sail on distant seas. 6 You formed the mountains by your power and armed yourself with mighty strength. 7 You quieted the raging oceans with their pounding waves and silenced the shouting of the nations. 8 Those who live at the ends of the earth stand in awe of your wonders. From where the sun rises to where it sets, You inspire shouts of joy.” (Psalm 65:5-8 NLT)
A dream (something that somebody hopes, longs, or is ambitious for, usually something difficult to attain or far removed from present circumstances) fulfilled is a tree of life. Jesus in John 10:10b “I am come that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” Let your tree of life be filled with hope in God.
